Mohair: Properties & Sewing Tips | Fabric Guide
Mohair is called the 'Diamond Fiber' and comes from the Angora goat. The luxurious fiber is characterized by silk-like luster, exceptional durability and excellent temperature regulation. Mohair is stronger than steel of comparable size, has high elasticity (up to 30% stretch) and is naturally flame-retardant. Sustainable production standards (Responsible Mohair Standard) cover 85% of South African production.

Sewing Tips for Mohair
Use clips instead of pins: For thick mohair velvet or mohair with pile, use fabric clips or clamps to secure layers. Pins leave visible holes and can disappear in the soft pile. Clips hold thick layers securely without damaging the fabric.
Adapt seam technique to fabric weight: Mohair ranges from lightweight gauze to heavy coating. For heavy mohair velvet, use a welt join method and clip the 'V' at ends to reduce bulk in seam allowances. Lightweight mohair can be sewn with regular seams.
Clean sewing machine regularly: Mohair can shed while sewing, especially fluffy qualities. Clean your sewing machine thoroughly during and after the project. A small vacuum or soft brush removes fibers from the bobbin case and prevents malfunctions.
