Taffeta: Properties, Care & Sewing Tips | Fabric Guide

Taffeta is a firm, smooth fabric with a characteristic shimmer, woven in plain weave. The name comes from the Persian word 'tafteh' meaning 'woven'. Taffeta was first made in Baghdad in the 12th century and is traditionally made from silk, today also from polyester or acetate. The typical rustling sound when moving makes it a special fabric for festive occasions.

Sewing Tips for Taffeta

Choose right needle and stitch length: Use a fine universal or Microtex needle (70-80). Choose a straight stitch with 2-2.5 mm stitch length. Stitches too long can gather the fabric, too short can damage it.

Use clips instead of pins: Taffeta is sensitive to needle marks which can remain permanently visible. Use fabric clips for fixing or only pin in the seam allowance.

Do not use chalk or water-soluble pens: Tailor's chalk or water-soluble marking pens can leave stains on taffeta. Mark with basting stitches instead or only in the seam allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Taffeta

Why does taffeta rustle?
The typical rustling is caused by the tight plain weave and the smooth, stiff surface of the fabric. The fibers rub against each other creating this characteristic sound, especially audible when moving.
Is taffeta suitable for beginners?
Taffeta is challenging to work with as it is sensitive to needle marks and water spots. Beginners should practice on scraps first, use fabric clips instead of pins and work carefully.
What types of taffeta are there?
There is piece-dyed taffeta (softer, ideal for lining), yarn-dyed taffeta (stiffer, for evening gowns), paper taffeta (thin and grainy), moire taffeta (with decorative grain) and taffeta chiffon (light and transparent).
