Taffeta: Properties, Care & Sewing Tips | Fabric Guide
Taffeta is a firm, smooth fabric with a characteristic shimmer, woven in plain weave. The name comes from the Persian word 'tafteh' meaning 'woven'. Taffeta was first made in Baghdad in the 12th century and is traditionally made from silk, today also from polyester or acetate. The typical rustling sound when moving makes it a special fabric for festive occasions.

Sewing Tips for Taffeta
Choose right needle and stitch length: Use a fine universal or Microtex needle (70-80). Choose a straight stitch with 2-2.5 mm stitch length. Stitches too long can gather the fabric, too short can damage it.
Use clips instead of pins: Taffeta is sensitive to needle marks which can remain permanently visible. Use fabric clips for fixing or only pin in the seam allowance.
Do not use chalk or water-soluble pens: Tailor's chalk or water-soluble marking pens can leave stains on taffeta. Mark with basting stitches instead or only in the seam allowance.
