Canvas: Properties & Sewing Tips | Fabric Guide
Canvas is a heavy, durable fabric in plain weave traditionally made from cotton or linen. Modern variants often contain recycled polyester or organic hemp for more sustainability. Canvas is characterized by its dense, firm structure, high tear resistance and durability. The fabric is used for robust clothing, bags, outdoor equipment and home textiles.
Properties of Canvas
- Extremely durable with high tensile strength (300-1000 PSI)
- Abrasion-resistant and dimensionally stable – withstands high loads
- Densely woven with natural water repellency
- Heavy weight (7-24 oz/yd²) for maximum durability
- Modern variants with recycled fibers for sustainability

Sewing Tips for Canvas
Use denim needles: Use sharp jeans or denim needles in size 100/16 or 110/18 for heavy canvas. Change the needle every 2-3 hours as the dense fibers dull it quickly. A blunt needle can damage the fabric and lead to skipped stitches.
Set longer stitch length: Use a longer stitch length of 3.0-4.0mm to prevent fabric puckering and minimize perforation of the dense material. For thick seams, a hump jumper or folded fabric scrap helps level the presser foot.
Pre-wash essential: Natural fiber canvas (cotton/linen) can shrink by 5-10%! Pre-wash the fabric before cutting. Do not pre-wash waxed or waterproof canvas as this damages the coating. Canvas frays heavily – finish edges with zigzag stitch or overlock.
