Modal: Properties & Sewing Tips | Fabric Guide
Modal is a semi-synthetic cellulose fiber made from beechwood, known for its exceptional softness. The fabric feels like a second skin and is often compared to silk or luxury cotton. Modal absorbs about 50% more moisture than cotton, is highly breathable and resistant to shrinking, fading and pilling. Production uses a closed-loop process with 95% water and chemical recovery.

Sewing Tips for Modal
Use ballpoint needle and elastic thread: Modal is usually available as jersey or knit. Use a ballpoint needle (70/10 or 80/12) and all-purpose polyester thread. The rounded tip glides between fibers without damaging them or causing runs.
Use stretch stitches for elasticity: Use a narrow zigzag stitch or special stretch stitch so seams can follow the fabric's stretch. A straight stitch can break on modal jersey. Alternatively, a serger is ideal for clean, stretchy seams.
Edges don't necessarily need finishing: Modal hardly frays, so raw cut edges can often be left unfinished. For a professional finish, you can finish edges with a serger or use a narrow zigzag stitch.
