Sewing Tips for Hemp
Pre-wash fabric: Always pre-wash your hemp fabric before cutting, as hemp can shrink 5–15% on first wash. After pre-washing, the fabric maintains its shape and becomes softer.
Use standard needle and all-purpose thread: For most hemp fabrics, a universal needle size 80/12 or 90/14 is sufficient. For heavy hemp canvas, use a stronger needle. All-purpose thread works well.
Protect edges from fraying: Hemp frays easily. Finish all cut edges immediately after cutting with a zigzag stitch or serger. This prevents fraying during processing.
