Flannel Fabric - Soft Cotton Fabric for Winter | Fabric Guide

Flannel is a fabric usually woven from cotton or wool that gets its characteristic fluffy surface through fulling or napping. This mechanical treatment creates small air pockets that make the fabric particularly soft and give it high heat retention. It is a classic functional fabric for cold seasons that is both lightweight and durable.

Properties of Flannel

  • Heat-insulating: Excellently retains body heat through napped surface
  • Absorbent: Can absorb a lot of moisture without feeling wet
  • Skin-friendly: Particularly soft hand (peach effect), non-scratchy
  • Easy care: Durable, usually wrinkle-free and very long-lasting
  • Lightweight: Provides lots of volume and warmth at low weight

Uses for Flannel

Clothing: Classic lumberjack shirts, pajamas and cozy sleepwear
Bedding: Cozy winter bed sheets and duvet covers
Baby items: Soft crawling blankets, swaddle bags or washable cloth diapers
Accessories: Warm scarves, bandanas or lined hats
Home textiles: Decorative cushion covers and light throw blankets

Care Instructions

1 Washing: Usually at 30-40 degrees on gentle cycle (wool flannel on wool program)
2 Drying: Air drying ideal, tumble dry only on low heat
3 Ironing: Usually not necessary, if so only at moderate heat on wrong side
4 Detergent: Use mild delicate detergent to keep fibers soft

Sewing Tips for Flannel

Pre-wash: Flannel often shrinks significantly on first wash (up to 10-15 percent) - always pre-wash and dry

Grain and pattern: For plaid patterns, pay attention to exact pattern matching at seams, plan for extra fabric

Needle choice: A universal needle (size 70-90) is usually sufficient, increase stitch length slightly for thick fabrics
